Spaying and neutering - health benefits and myths

Vet holding a small dog - spaying and neutering, MultiVet Lutynia

Spaying and neutering are the most frequently performed veterinary surgeries - and still surrounded by myths. Beyond preventing unwanted litters, they bring real, well-documented health benefits.

The health benefits

In females, early spaying markedly reduces the risk of mammary tumours and eliminates pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus. In males, neutering prevents testicular disease and reduces prostate problems. Many animals also gain in day-to-day comfort and safety - less roaming, fewer conflicts and less hormone-driven stress.

When to operate

The best timing depends on species, sex, breed and size. For many patients the procedure is done after they reach maturity, while for large-breed dogs waiting until the skeleton has fully developed is often recommended. In cats, early spaying gives the greatest protection against mammary tumours. The right moment is always worth agreeing individually with the vet.

Preparing for the procedure

After surgery your pet needs restricted activity, wound protection and a check-up; most patients are back to form within a fortnight. We perform these procedures as part of our veterinary surgery service at MultiVet in Lutynia near Wrocław.
