Kitten vaccination schedule - protection from the first weeks

MultiVet Lutynia · Veterinary advice

Vet with a white cat - kitten vaccinations, MultiVet Lutynia

Vaccinations protect kittens against diseases that are still common and can be fatal - panleukopenia above all. A sensible schedule, started at the right time, builds solid immunity for the whole of a cat's life.

A typical kitten schedule

The first vaccination is usually given at around 8-9 weeks of age, with a booster 3-4 weeks later. The core protection covers panleukopenia (feline parvovirus), herpesvirus and calicivirus; where justified we also vaccinate against feline leukaemia (FeLV) and rabies. Booster vaccinations follow, with the scope depending on the cat's lifestyle.

Do indoor cats need vaccines?

Yes. The vaccine set is matched to risk: an outdoor cat with contact with other animals needs broader protection, but even a strictly indoor cat should receive the core vaccines - viruses can arrive on shoes and clothing, and any unplanned event (an escape, a clinic stay, a cattery) means contact with pathogens.

After the vaccination

Kittens usually cope very well. For a day your kitten may be a little quieter or sleepy, with mild soreness at the injection site - this passes on its own. Vomiting, facial swelling, marked lethargy or breathing trouble are rare but need urgent contact with the clinic.
